What is Private Medical Insurance (PMI)?

Private health insurance is a product designed to help cover the expense of private health care treatments for a range of possible medical conditions.

These policies can cover a wide range of diagnostic approaches to identify diseases, illnesses or injuries, and offer treatments to get you back to full health again.

Private medical insurance is popular for a number of reasons, from flexible appointment times to being able to choose experienced specialist consultants and high quality surgeons in order to guarantee you’re seen quickly. With the privacy of your own en-suite room during your recovery, which can include a TV and full a la carté menu, you’ll be glad you got a quote today.

Claiming on health insurance is easy too. Once your GP has referred you to a specialist, you simply visit a private service instead of an NHS one. When the treatment is complete, the insurer will pay the private hospital directly. Depending on your policy, there may be an excess to pay directly to the hospital when settling your treatment costs.

Why compare Health Insurance here?

Visiting MoneySpace is your first step to comparing health insurance policies from many leading private medical insurance providers, such as Aviva, VitalityHealth, Bupa, Health-On-Line, AXA & more.

If you already have a health insurance, there’s a free market review service to ensure that your policy is still the best option for you financially. This is recommended if you’ve had the policy for many years, as moving to a more modern product can often save you a lot of money.

Switching policies is easy and could help save you money

Feel free to ‘switch’ a private medical insurance policy.

Even if you already have cover in place and have enjoyed that continuous protection for many years, you may have developed conditions and/or claimed whilst being covered. If that is the case it would probably be in your best interest to consider switching, adding additional options or looking to lower your monthly premiums to make cover more affordable.

Switching now could mean you’re able to carry forwards a pre-existing condition to a new policy. However some conditions that are currently covered on your existing policy may be excluded from your new cover. All your options will be spelled out in plain English, allowing you to get the best protection possible for your specific circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

PMI premiums differ greatly from one person to the next, as they’re based on a range of factors including age, postcode, the underwriting method, and of course the level of cover you require. Some companies offer a no-claims discount, which works in the same way as your home or car insurance.

Some offer discounts for non-smokers, and customers with a healthy body mass index (BMI). Expert advisers can provide more details on the discounts provided.

Some insurers offer benefits and discounts in order to incentivise policyholders to stay healthy.

These can include discounts on high street shopping, luxury weekend breaks, family holidays, gym membership, weight loss group fees and even car hire.

Please ask your agent for full details during the quote process.

Not at first.

Private health insurance won’t cover any pre-existing condition right away. However, after a period of time (usually two years) your insurance may cover that condition, providing certain criteria are met.

Policies offered by the leading UK insurers differ, so please ensure you detail any existing conditions during discussions with your friendly agent.

Chronic conditions are long-term ailments (e.g. asthma and diabetes) that are considered incurable, but ones that can be controlled with regular medication.

As such chronic conditions can generally be managed sufficiently by the NHS, these are rarely covered by private health care insurance.

Yes, premiums will likely increase every year as you age.

The specific amount they increase depends on your insurer, and other factors such as your claims history. Your agent will explain these details.

PMI plans can be tailored to suit your exact needs and budgets. Policies will have various options that can be added or excluded in order to fit your budget. Another way to make your monthly premiums even more affordable is to add an optional excess.

Every insurer has a list of ‘general exclusions’ that they don’t cover.

These can include HIV/Aids, war, riots, self-inflicted ailments and chronic conditions.

For example, treatments required due to alcohol or drug addiction are excluded as these are considered to be self-inflicted.

No medical checks are required.

The specific approach taken by an insurer will vary depending on the type of underwriting used.

Moratorium underwriting (mori) doesn’t require you to divulge your medical history. This option excludes pre-existing conditions (meaning anything you’ve had symptoms of, treatment or medication for, or advice about) within the past five years prior to taking out the policy. After a two year period, provided certain conditions are met, these conditions may be covered.

Full medical underwriting requires you to disclose details of all previous and current medical conditions, along with any medication you are taking. The insurer may then choose to exclude these conditions from your cover – however again, no medical is required.
